Description
Designed and managed as a memorial to the first President of the United States, the parkway passes monuments and memorials, wildlife preserves and historic homes, waterfalls and scenic overlooks. Points of interest include Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, Fort Hunt, Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, Arlington House, Arlington National Cemetery, Claude Moore Colonial Farm, Fort Marcy, and Great Falls Park. In addition to its status as an All-American Road, the parkway is also a unit of the National Park System.

Act providing for acquisition of land, establishment, and development of the parkway authorized on May 29, 1930. The road in Maryland was renamed the Clara Barton Parkway on November 28, 1989.
Start/End Point
Parkway includes two main sections: the 25-mile Virginia section that runs from Mount Vernon northward along the Potomac River to I-495; and the Clara Barton Parkway in Maryland that follows the Potomac River for 7 miles from Chain Bridge in Washington, DC, to north of I-495.
