Description
The Billy the Kid Trail pays tribute to the infamous "Wild West" outlaw and several other western icons, including Smokey Bear, as it winds through the rugged beauty of the million-acre Lincoln National Forest. Points of interest include the Hubbard Museum of the American West, Fort Stanton, Lincoln State Monument, and Smokey Bear Museum and Park.
Start/End Point
From Ruidoso, this loop route follows US 70 east to Hondo, then US 380 northwest to Capitan, then NM 48 south to Ruidoso. A separate section of the byway follows NM 220 from near Alto and NM 48 to just north of Fort Stanton at US 380.
